Started in 1998 under the late President of AUC Mr. John D. Gerhart, the program was a student initiative designed to increase English literacy among AUC workers. The need for the program arose from the desire of the workers to communicate more effectively with the AUC international community. Though the initial effort was halted for a few years, the idea remained alive until the program was reinstalled in the Spring of 2006 under the management of the Gerhart Center.
