Program Objectives

The Faculty/ Staff Mentor Program is a tool to assist new international students in familiarizing themselves with their new environment through the support of their faculty/ staff mentors. The program provides a comfortable atmosphere for open discussion, as well as an informal, reliable environment to receive feedback regarding the AUC experience.

The Role of the Mentor

·         Thementor will act as a source of advice and assistance to the ''mentee',he/she will also act as a cultural guide for social situations thatmight arise during the mentee’s stay.

·         Thementor is usually either Egyptian, or an expatriate who has acquiredfamiliarity with the local culture, has been in a similar experience, and so able to relate.

·         The mentor will be a contact for mentees to refer to for specific needs or problems as they may arise.

·         The mentor will encourage the mentee to contact him/ her in case of emergency in addition to the ISA emergency line.

·         Thementor will attempt to have at hand easily accessible importantinformation for aiding his/ her mentee, e.g. numbers for the ISAemergency line, clinic, etc.

·         Thementor is expected to make him/her-self accessible to the mentee viaemail, phone, office hours and/or occasional on/off campus socialmeetings throughout the semester. The method of accessibility is left to the mentor’s preference.

·         Timedevoted is left to the mentor’s preference. It is advisable though, todevote more time in the initial adjustment period, and then againmid-way through the semester when the mentee has developed his/her ownperspective.

The Role of the Mentee

·         The mentee should be willing to accommodate the mentor’s suggested availabilities.

·         The mentee is encouraged to seize the opportunity and seek his/ her mentors advice.

·         The mentee is encouraged to consult with their mentee on issues where they feel unsure.

·          Thoughmentees are advised to contact the ISA emergency line first, menteesmay also seek their mentor’s assistance in case of emergency, and soare encouraged to keep their mentor’s contacts on hand.

Expectations and Benefits

·         The mentor and mentee will form a mutually beneficial relationship of sharing perspectives.

·         Mentees will gain insight on cultural issues.

Mentors and mentees will be matched on a first come first servedbasis. They will be introduced through email, and are encouragedto get in touch prior to the mentee's arrival to Cairo. On September9th, 2009 a formal introduction will be arranged by ISA.
Toward the end of the semester, mentors and mentees will be required to complete a short evaluation sheet
